My oldest step-daughter spent a year abroad during school studying in Japan. She brought home a love of sakura trees and infected me with it! The stems on these pillows are taken from an original hand drawn image first created for the lace I made for her wedding gown. The line of dragonflies down the side is one of a handful of traditional Japanese patterns found in Sashiko embroidery. Sashiko is a very old form of hand sewing using simple running stitches. The Japanese word Sashiko means “little stabs“.
The illustrations on the pillows are first hand drawn from my imagination with a silk painting resist, then painted with high quality silk dyes I custom mix to my own hues. After painting, the silk is steamed to set the dye making these completely colorfast and hand washable! After steam setting, the Asian influenced design was embellished with metallic gold silk fabric paint to create the stamen in the blossoms. These are truly one of a kind pieces of textile art for your home!
